Background: Tatiarra’s Heathcote Vineyard occupies a unique parcel of earth. Around 500,000,000 years ago, natural forces, moulding the world, hardened the planet’s surface forming Cambrian rock. Today, that rock exists as a discontinuous band of red earth, extending from the Heathcote township and running north past Colbinabbin, parallel to the Mount Camel range. The Tatiarra Vineyard is sustained by this band of soil derived from this ancient Cambrian rock in which Shiraz vines thrive, producing fruit of incomparable quality and wines of matchless character. The resulting wines are perfectly balanced, possessing tremendous exuberance and are capable of long term cellar development. The Cambrian Shiraz represents a wonderful expression of the Tatiarra Vineyard’s terroir and is a classic, big Heathcote Shiraz. The grapes for this wine were cropped at 1.6 tonnes per acre, producing a wine of immense power and concentration.

Vintage Conditions: Although the 2007 growing season was difficult due to the extreme drought conditions, great wine was still produced at Tatiarra. Viticulturist Bob Wilson uses radio controlled moisture probes to monitor root moisture content, whilst manipulating bud numbers, canopy cover and crop levels. The team's skills were fully tested, however they managed to maintain tension and avoid stressing the vines – a tough ask even under ideal conditions.

Tatiarra has in a very short time established a reputation as “one of the most exciting operations in Heathcote” producing powerful, concentrated and structured Shiraz that possess stunning flavour persistence.

Colour: Inky black purple colour

Nose: Perfumed aromas of ripe blackberry and liquorice with an overlay of toasty vanillin oak followed by some blackpepper and spice

Palate: Showing Impressive weight and richness the palate is loaded with flavours of blackberry,liquorice allsorts, spicy vanillin oak and black pepper that fill every corner of the mouth. Outstanding persistence of flavour. Slightly firmish yet supportive tannin structure. Very long liquorice blackberry, vanillin oak and black pepper aftertaste. A Superb Heathcote Shiraz that still has plenty of life left in it. Drink over the next 8-10 years.

The original 10-acre Tatiarra vineyard was established by Bill Hepburn in the early 1990s, while he purportedly camped out in his “Caravan of Dreams.” More recently another 10 acres have been committed to vine, and McLaren Vale winemaker, Ben Riggs, has taken his talents to this impressive Heathcote project. The estate is producing some very classy Shirazes that are whole-heartedly recommended. The Culled Barrel label is exactly as it suggests – a “second wine” composed of declassified barrels that did not make the cuts for the other “grand vins.” Nonetheless, the 2007 and 2008 are still pretty impressive wines.
The 2007 Cambrian Shiraz has a very deep garnet-black color and gives pronounced notes of warm blackberries, macerated black cherries, spice box, powdered cinnamon and liquorice. Crisp acid cuts through the dense fruit on this full-bodied wine, with a medium level of fine tannins to lend just enough texture. The anise laced finish is long. Enticingly approachable now, it will be at its best from 2013 to 2020+.
