Vertical Tasting 2002-2005 Tatiarra Caravan of Dreams Shiraz Pressings

Recently aTatiarra Caravan of Dreams Shiraz Pressings vertical tasting of Tatiarra Caravan of Dreams Shiraz Pressings was conducted to see how the wines were maturing. Apart from the 2002 vintage which was Tatiarra’s first, and not under the full supervision of the Tatiarra viticulturist team, the wines were showing no signs of ageing and evolving magnificently. The 2003 in particular still looked like a baby and whilst superb drinking now has years of life left ahead of it. Similarly, the outstanding 2004 & 2005 vintages are evolving at a glacial pace. Further vertical tastings will be conducted over the next 12 months for the rest of the Tatiarra collection to co-incide with release of the 2009 stable of reds throughout 2011.

2002 Tatiarra Caravan of Dreams Shiraz Pressings
Heathcote, Victoria

This was the first year that Tatiarra produced a vintage under the newly formed companies label although the vineyard was not yet under the full supervision of the winemaker and viticulturist. Opaque black dark red colour with very deep dark red hue. The nose displays excellent lift with aniseed top notes followed by some liquorice allsorts, blackberry and confectionary with some clove and toast characters as end notes. The palate is in transition stage and is beginning to shed some of its voluptuous baby fat fruit characters as the tertiary flavours slowly evolve. Mouthfilling flavours of aniseed and liquorice dominate the front palate and are followed by some blackpepper and toasty earth like characters on the back palate. Super fine grained, slightly dryish but balanced tannins with very long aftertaste of aniseed, confectionary, blackpepper and toasty cedar. Note the cork had dried out and was a little difficult to extract.
Cellar a further 3-4 years.

2003 Tatiarra Caravan of Dreams Shiraz Pressings
Heathcote, Victoria

The colour of this wine is holding up exceptionally well displaying an opaque black crimson red colour with deep dark red hue. Exceptionally perfumed nose of violets, blackberry, liquorice allsorts and confectionary with some blackpepper end notes. Still incredibly youthful the palate shows much more freshness than the 2002 and still has a very long life ahead of it. Voluptuous, decadently rich and super concentrated the palate delivers an explosive flavour experience of blackberry, liquorice, confectionary and spice with a strong blackpepper back palate. Impeccably balanced possessing excellent structure and super fine grained tannins. Exceptional length with very long aftertaste of liquorice, blackberry, confectionary and spice. Magic stuff! Whilst approachable now this wine still has another 10-15 years of cellaring left in it.

2004 Tatiarra Caravan of Dreams Shiraz Pressings
Heathcote, Victoria

This is the most lauded Caravan of Dreams having received a 98+ point score from esteemed US wine critic Robert Parker. The colour is a super saturate of black purple with a black heart and very deep black purple hue showing paint like cling to the sides of the glass, still looking like a 1 or 2 year old wine. Lifted aromas of blackberry, dark plum, liquorice and confectionary with a touch of vanilla and pepper as end notes. The palate is about as concentrated and dense as one could wish for, packed with still very youthful opulent fruit. Explosive blackpepper, liquorice, blackberry and confectionary flavours with strong lingering blackpepper and liquorice characters re-emerging on the back palate. Amazing concentration and persistence. Velvet smooth tannin structure with exceptionally long aftertaste of blackpepper, liquorice, blackberry, confectionary and spice. A power house Heathcote Shiraz that shows the most pronounced peppery characters of the line up thus far. Evolving very slowly and easily capable of another 10+ years cellaring, this is a legend in the making.
