Tatiarra’s Founders

Nick Chlebnikowski & Bill Spring had held a long term vision to establish a vineyard with a key objective of producing world class Shiraz. In 2001 they co-founded the company Domaines Tatiarra and set about raising seed capital to purchase a vineyard. Along with key investor Gerry Carrington they managed to raise enough funds to purchase the vineyard from Bill Hepburn and Tatiarra was born.

The pair quickly set about putting together a highly skilled team to manage the operation. They assembled a formidable winemaking duo of Ben Riggs and Peter Flewellyn, together with viticulturist and owner of the cult wine Whistling Eagle - Ian Rathjen. The first vintage was produced in 2002 under the watchful eye of Bill Hepburn and further plantings were made in 2003 to expand the vineyards.

Today the vineyard is managed by Bob Wilson and Ben Riggs continues as chief winemaker ably assisted by Rob Gibson as chief viticulturist. The vines are managed in such a way to produce intensely black, highly concentrated fruit. Low yields and judicious use of water is applied only when required to reduce vine stress which can occur at flowering, variason or sometimes during the growing season. The grapes are hand picked over a variety of picking dates to ensure that all of the fruit is at it’s optimal level of physiological ripeness. The grapes are then transferred that same day to Pettavel Winery in Geelong where they are immediately crushed. Tatiarra winemaker Ben Riggs selects a range of French and American, new and used barrels thus ensuring maximum complexity of flavour by creating layers in the wine. Different fermentation techniques are also employed. The wines progress is managed on a day to day basis at the winery and each barrel is progressively tasted with the final selection being made by a team. Wine not up to the exacting standards required for Tatiarra’s top labels are declassified and sold off as Tatiarra Culled Barrel.

Since the inaugural 2002 vintage the wines have quickly forged a reputation as one of Heath-cote's top producers consistently receiving critical acclaim from the likes of leading wine writers Robert Parker and James Halliday.

Unfortunately all three founding members, Nick, Bill & Gerry are no longer with us, however, their dream lives on and the pursuit for perfection continues......
